Overview

I conceptualize and design digital products for the web and apps across platforms and devices. My background in user experience, interaction design and art direction have been essential to my work in news and media.

Experience

Senior Visual Product Designer,
NPR (2015-present)

Product and user experience design for projects that span NPR’s websites and apps. Fluent in scrum/agile team processes. Major projects include NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Contest; an organization-wide evaluation and redesign of email newsletters; and ongoing redesign and prototyping of NPR’s news app. Consulted cross-departmentally on user experience for Generation Listen website and internal archiving tools. Produced episodes for a kids podcast through NPR’s Serendipity Days and Story Lab projects.

Juror,
Communication Arts Interactive Annual (November 2016)

Joined a jury of five design professionals to evaluate entries to the magazine’s annual interactive competition — which spans digital, social and environmental design.


Keynote Speaker and Panelist,
EJC News Impact Summit (October 2015)

Invited by the European Journalism Center to be a keynote speaker and panelist at their News Impact Summit in Amsterdam. Spoke about effective collaborations between designers and journalists for a select group of Dutch news executives, then presented again and participated as a panelist for a broader audience of journalists at all levels.


Digital Design Director,
The Atlantic (2013-2015)

Design direction for the digital product and development team. Responsible for designing all aspects of The Atlantic and CityLab websites. UX lead and designer on responsive redesigns, including a mobile-first overhaul of CityLab.com. Redesigned TheAtlantic.com to be responsive to much acclaim. Redesigned The Atlantic magazine iOS apps. Frequently created graphics and illustrations to support editorial content. Wrote for The Atlantic’s digital products blog. Frequently collaborated with developers, product managers and editorial staff, while managing another designer on our team.


Manager/Senior Multimedia Designer,
Newseum (2000-2013)

Responsible for concept development, art direction, design and navigation of educational interactive experiences displayed on museum exhibit touch screens, touch walls and tables, plus mobile devices. Designer of Newseum.org and multiple spin-off websites. Helped lead the design of the completely digital HP New Media Gallery museum exhibit. Developed logos, identity packages and electronic signage for programs and events. Created touch screen segments filmed for a nationally televised program. Managed the development of internal websites created as feature/bug ticketing systems. Organized staff to use project management tools. Wrote summaries of newspaper front pages published online as “Top Ten Today’s Front Pages.”
